therapy for adolescents and young adults

Helping young people find their story and learn to grow

about me

Fiona McKinstrie (MSc, MA, MBACP).

I am a qualified psychodynamic psychotherapist, specialising in work with adolescents and young adults (up to the age of 25).

My training includes clinical and pre-clinical postgraduate qualifications from leading psychotherapy institutions the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust and the Anna Freud Centre and I am professionally registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

My therapeutic style is warm and informal, giving young clients a comfortable, safe place in which to explore their thoughts and feelings and bring about positive change.

“You are the first therapist I have spoken to who sounds like they really care, so thank you.”

— CLIENT (18 years)

the approach

Growing up can be tough and sometimes we all need a little help.

By talking to a trained therapist, young people can begin to make sense of a range of complex feelings and emotions which can relieve underlying unhappiness, worry or distress. Some issues young people might face which can be helped in therapy include anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, self-harm, friendship and relationship difficulties, social media addiction and many other difficult emotional experiences.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy can be particularly helpful when it seems hard to make sense of what might be going on. Therapy takes place weekly at the same time and the number of sessions is usually discussed together during the assessment.

Conveniently located in South London, minutes from Herne Hill Station (a 10 minute train from London Victoria or 15 minutes from Blackfriars) or a short journey from Brixton tube.

In addition to in-person sessions, I also offer a remote therapy option. Sometimes being online can be a more comfortable way for young people to think about thoughts and feelings and I make sure this space is safe, secure and confidential.
